Immigration, political blunders, and summer lovin
All righty then this is going to be a rather long post, but seeing as this is where I post my thoughts I believe that I can get away with it. First off there has been a whole lot of talk concerning illegal immigration here recently. Well that really good because we have a serious problem going on and it needs to be resolved. So here in a nutshell is how I feel about the whole thing.
My $.02
Okay, I understand why people from Mexico would want to come here the opportunities here are tremendously better than what they would find at home. Instead of coming over hear and damaging our economy why don't they stay at home and try to change their government. Also for the ADD people out there here are my main points in bullet form.
1. Our health care system cannot support 30-40 million people going to the emergency room, getting treatment and not paying
2. All the other immigrants in this country learned the language and became a part of the culture. You see sign here in English and Spanish. How many Wet floor signs do you see in English/German, English/Polish, English/Italian, English/Chinese? We should not have to make special allowance for people who don't at least try to fit in with the culture.
3. Public school systems would be able to provide a better education for everyone if they didn't have to spend a significant amount of extra time and money on "English as a second language courses," translators and the like.
-I'm getting ready to student teach next semester. How am I supposed to teach a child that cannot understand what I am saying? Is fair for the rest of the class if I have to go slower/cover less material because of a student is not fluent.
4. Another school deal....Why are we paying taxes for educating a child whose parents are not paying anything into the system.
5. Our economy is not benefited at all if an illegal person works and then money grams all he makes back home to Mexico.
6. There are a lot of people out there that keep stating that our economy could not survive with out illegal workers. I believe that we are probably paying more to give them totally free healthcare, and an education than we are earning by employing them at $1-2 an hour.
I'm all for immigration, just do it legally. We have laws in this country and you shouldn't be allowed to pick and choose the ones that you want to follow. I don't like driving at 70mph, I think I'll cruise around at 120mph and tell the policeman that pulls me over that I just am not real fond of speeding laws. Or for that matter I’m not really fond of paying taxes. However, I do not think the IRS will just look the other way if I decide that suddenly I do not wish to pay them.
Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Well now that I’ve rambled on about immigration for forever, I’m so glad that summer is almost here. I can’t wait. I’m not sure what the summer holds in store for me yet. That is one cool thing about the future; you normally look forward to it until it gives you a flat tire and syphilis. I’m just kidding; I really am looking forward to summer. I’m hoping that Christ Episcopal will decide to keep me on. It really is cool indeed to get paid to go to church and sing. I must say that it is one of the most enjoyable jobs I’ve had up to date. Leah and I are hoping to go on a vacation this year and try to visit Florida. It will be cool to swim around in the ocean yet again. I’m pondering picking up a 3rd job this summer to make some extra money. No, no I’m not really poor it just might be fun to have a little source of income that is not devoured by the horrible bill demons. I’m thinking maybe something different than other things I’ve done. Maybe working in a shop or doing something outdoors. I’ll probably regret saying that once the summers sweltering heat arrives, but then again that would be the cool thing about having a job just for kicks. If it really sucks or I don’t like it I could always quit. That’s about all I’ve got for now.
